Video Game Characters Theme Songs (collab w/ Tamsin)
Welcome back, adventurer!
Have you ever listened to a song and thought, wow, this really fits this one obscure character/person/scene? If not, then seriously what are you doing it’s a ton of fun and I’d recommend trying sometime. So, I thought I'd try to give video game characters their own theme song. Now, there are a ton of songs out there, and having access to every song in existence makes it a little too easy. That’s why I’ve brought in Tamsin, who runs a pretty sick music blog. She’s giving me 3 random songs that I then have to find characters to match them with. I’m going to be focusing more on the characters than the songs, but if you’d like to look at song analyses, then go check out her blog! Plus, it’s always nice to branch out a little, and it’ll be a neat challenge using rap songs when I usually listen to alternative/punk rock bands.
1. Song: Forever Yours by Brent Faiyaz
Characters: Noah and Mio from Xenoblade Chronicles 3
This is a cute song about someone who thinks they like someone they just met, and eventually embraces that fact and vows to be there for them forever. I’d say that describes Noah and Mio here fairly well. Explaining the universe of Xenoblade 3 is a whole novel in of itself, but long story short, there are two factions locked in an endless war. Noah and Mio are from opposing sides, but a chance encounter leads to them and a few others becoming fugitives searching for answers. On their journey, he and Mio grow closer, despite how they never should have even met. They have so many cute moments together, including trading their flutes after having great communication and actually talking through an argument,
Mio telling Noah that he made her life worth living while they’re locked up and at their lowest,
and the two vowing to be with each other no matter where they are.
And let me tell you, it really makes certain moments hit that much harder. These two embody relationship goals, honestly.
2. Song: Resentment by PARTYNEXTDOOR
Character: Junpei Iori from Persona 3
I’ve been playing Persona 3 Reload nonstop since the remake released earlier this month, and it is seriously incredible. I despised Junpei at the start of the game, so much that I benched him for a while. He’s jealous that the protagonist is appointed as the field leader, nearly ruining the first operation by running ahead and later getting kidnapped after telling someone that he was the leader. Heck, his sole reason for joining the group initially was to “play the hero”.
And yet, he resents himself deep down as well, finding himself agreeing with some of the antagonists and unsure of how to process those feelings. He feels like he’s got nothing going for him. And similar to the lyrics of the song, he avoids his problems instead of confronting them, hiding behind a “class clown” facade and letting his insecurities turn into jealousy. However, he has some amazing development as the game continues, leading to him becoming one of my favorite characters in Persona 3. He even became one of my favorite party members to use in battles, so good job getting off the bench, Junpei.
3. Song: All I Know by Machine Gun Kelly
Character: Rindo Kanade from NEO: The World Ends With You
The World Ends With You is a series that embodies the early 2000s, and I love it for that. There’s cool graffiti, funky outfits, and it has a unique comic book art style. There’s also references to music everywhere, from characters nicknamed Fret and Beat, to the enemies being called “Noise” and named after different music genres. Pretty fitting for Machine Gun Kelly in general now that I think about it.
I’m giving this particular song to Rindo Kanade. “All I Know” is about feeling lost, confused, and uncertain, which understandably matches how he feels about suddenly passing through cars and being told that he’s dead.
Everyone has a unique psychic ability, and Rindo discovers that he has the power to travel back in time once per day, though he starts to rely on that more than he realizes. That, combined with his general indecisiveness, becomes a problem when he can’t just time travel his way out of a situation. He frequently finds himself confused and going with the flow, fitting for the theme of MGK’s song.
Sadly, we have come to the end of our theme song adventure. If any of these characters sound interesting, then I’d 100% recommend checking out their games because they’re all amazing. You may need to abandon your social life, but hey, some sacrifices must be made for the greater good. Or if any of the songs caught your eye, then support the artist. And thanks again to Tamsin for the song help, so go check out her blog too!
Take care on your quests!
